A rare survivor poster from the 70s – large format vintage black and white print featuring the legendary rock icon Jimi Hendrix. The iconic Jimi Hendrix photo was taken in 1967 by renowned music photographer Gered Mankowitz to promote Hendrix’s live performances in London that year.
This authentic original vintage poster, not a modern reprint, has been mounted onto a hardboard base with a red frame, which has preserved the poster as presented here. We believe this to be a promotional poster that was distributed to music record shops, it is not the conventional glossy type poster, and does not have the typical copyright marks associated with those later prints. The poster is more typical of promotional billboard posters that would have been temporarily pasted onto walls and gig venues.
Printed in large format, this original black and white promotional poster measures approximately 30 x 40 inches and is an iconic poster of Hendrix in his vintage Hussars military jacket, which Hendrix is said to have purchased from a vintage shop on Portobello Road, London. Which, almost 60 years on is somehow a fitting tribute to this survivor poster that bears some of its own battle scars.
The poster has an authentic edge, this period was an explosion of expression where young people expressed their tribal following and individuality. Although the print in black and white, the way it has been mounted in the lively red frame and all of its characteristics is a fantastic reminded and symbol of this vibrant era.
The poster showcases Hendrix’s captivating black and white image in his raw form, captured during the now famous, Mason’s Yard, London, 1967 photoshoot that has become one of the most iconic and instantly recognizable portraits of the guitar virtuoso. Hendrix’s intense gaze and dynamic pose exude the raw energy and virtuosic talent that made him one of the greatest and most influential musicians of the 1960s.
A fascinating Insight into the iconic image can the read here.

Condition, as seen from the photos, it’s an imposing piece, its large scale and originality makes for an authentic art piece. The image is in remarkable condition for its age, there is yellowing in a couple of areas and some watermarks with a small loss on the upper right hand (see photos). But the overall effect is radiant visceral wall art that has real presence.
Those wanting an authentic characterful piece of period art from this time will not be disappointed by this true piece of rock music memorabilia.
