Handcrafted Bentwood Side Table in Cherry and Ash – The ‘Sŵs’ Collection – By Welsh Artist Dylan Glyn

This captivating side table is the work of Welsh designer and woodworker Dylan Glyn, whose designs are informed by the inherent structure and construction of timber. Movement is a recurring theme in his work, manifested through curving, organic forms that evoke the natural world.

The distinctive bentwood tripod base of the ‘Sŵs’ side table is a prime example of Glyn’s artistry. Each leg is carved from a single piece of ash, meticulously turned with a tapering shape and then steam-bent to create a graceful, floating silhouette. The unique C-profile of the legs was delicately carved by hand, lending an almost sculptural quality to the design.

For Glyn, the beauty of wood should be appreciated in all its natural forms, and this ethos is reflected in the table’s construction. The tabletop is crafted from locally-sourced cherry, its warm, reddish tones complementing the lighter ash of the base. Rather than using graded lumber, Glyn allows the inherent character of the wood to shine through, with knots, grain patterns, and other unique markings left visible.

These natural character of the wood is celebrated by the artist as storytellers – tangible evidence of the tree’s growth and history. Each ‘Sŵs’ side table offers a unique window into the life of the tree from which it was made, imbuing the piece with an organic, one-of-a-kind beauty.

Measuring 18 inches wide x 19 inches high, this side table provides generous surface area while maintaining a graceful, understated presence. Its clean-lined design and artful bentwood base make it an ideal accent piece for living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways, adding both functionality and sculptural styling to your home.

Made in Wales, the collection is named ‘Sŵs’, a nod to where the tables are made in Caersws. The name is derived from the Welsh place name elements ‘Caer’ and ‘Sŵs’. ‘Caer’ translates as ‘fort’, the derivation of the second element is less certain, it is thought in local traditions that ‘Sŵs’ hold a personal name, either of a Queen Swswen (a name which translates as “The Blessed/Pure Kiss”) a Celtic leader who is said to have fought a battle in the vicinity.

Crafted to the highest standards of quality, each ‘Sŵs’ side table is finished with a durable, low-sheen topcoat that enhances the natural luster of the wood while providing protection against daily use.
