A 1950s Oak Corkscrew Armchair with Straw Seat attributed to Charles Dudouyt

An armchair designed by the renowned French furniture maker Charles Dudouyt in the 1940s. The chair features Dudouyt’s iconic corkscrew-shaped bobbin turned legs, as well as a rush seat and back. The construction and materials used are characteristic of Dudouyt’s high-quality craftsmanship from the early-to-mid 20th century.  Finished in a rich dark oak, the warm tones of the wood blend beautifully with the lighter rush seat and backrest.

About the Designer

Charles Dudouyt (1900-1969) was a French furniture designer and maker known for his unique and elegant modernist style. Dudouyt’s pieces often incorporated natural materials like wood, rattan, and rush, combined with sinuous, organic forms. His designs were influenced by traditional French provincial styles as well as emerging modernist aesthetics of the mid-20th century. Condition

The armchair is in excellent condition, the rush seat and back show minimal signs of wear, and the corkscrew legs are sturdy and intact.  Some minor age-related marks and watermarks to the arms.  An exceptional example of Dudouyt’s celebrated design.
