Large Decorative Antique 19th Century Carved Indian Elephant with Painted Caparision

Status: sold

£0.00

Ref: GD1419 Category:

A wonderful example of an Indian Carved Elephant in full regalia, this large example has good colour and form, the colourful decoration is still vibrant but has a wondrous worn patina, especially around the head and truck where it has clearly been rubbed, possibly as a good luck ritual.

The carving is of good scale and proportion, it has an ebonised finish with colourful decoration of fine detail representing the traditional caparison dress used in royal celebration and festivals.

A symbolism of strength, power, stability and wisdom, elephants have long been used in art and sculpture for centuries, and in the tradition of Feng Shui the elephant represents good luck and fortune.
